Bio

Geoffrey Lea is the Sr. Director Business Development for DSA Inc. supporting the Strategic Solutions Group located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.   He has worked in Project Management since 2003 and received his PMP certification in 2008.  He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional, Certified Systems Engineering Professional, and ITIL v3 certified.  Geoffrey received his undergraduate degree in Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an Executive MBA with concentration on International Business from the George Washington University.  Prior to DSA, he held the position of Director Capture and Program Manager at L-3 GS&ES, and VP of Network Services at the Redeye Group/Allied Telesis Inc.

How to maximize group performance as the PM

As PM, how many times do you get to hand pick your project team? Never, at least not in my experience. So how do you manage and maximize the performance of a group of people that don't know each other and don't report to you?

  • Understand individual goals and establish group goals... your goals are not necessarily everyone else's goals.
  • Identify and understand each group member's strengths and weaknesses... diversity will make your group stronger.
  • Assign work/tasks based on strengths/capability, not in order to balance the workload to be fair... dividing work "evenly" will decrease performance and increase frustration.
  • Understand that individual workloads will always be different...different skills are needed at different phases of the project.
  • No secrets, no surprises...communicate, communicate, communicate.
