Presenter:Don Hoffmann

Since starting his career at RCA Government Communication Systems in Camden NJ as a Mechanical Engineer on SATCOM programs in 1983, Don Hoffmann has been interested in the how well teams function. Noticing a gap in communications across stove-piped Programs within his discipline, he launched "Mechanical's Monthly" newsletter to profile new programs, illuminate new technologies and best practices, boosting moral and fostering mutual respect across the mechanical team. This led to team leadership and management opportunities in engineering, and proof that a single individual at any level can make a positive change in a large corporation. The focus on team performance sharpened through mergers and acquisitions, as RCA Government systems was bought by GE Aerospace and Jack Welch unleashed his high performance expectations, and legendary management style. After gaining his MSEM from Drexel in 1999, Don made the move from Engineering Management to Operations Management, using team building to counterbalance outsourcing of the 1990's. During acquisition by Martin Marietta he absorbed the visionary leadership of Norm Augustine, at a time when the business was engaged in the designing the communications and tracking system for Space Station Freedom, and was the business was trying to find its next core product.

As Lockheed merged with Martin Marietta, Don made his first geographic move to the Radar/Sonar business in Syracuse where he led a larger team, drove the Lean/Six Sigma Implementations in Operations, and helped Syracuse Operations win the Industry Week 10 Best Plants Award.  He carried that World Class Lean Production mindset to West Palm Beach Florida for a Lean Start-up opportunity to establish the Navy Remote Mine Hunting System (RMS) Production Operation. After a corporate Operation and Supply Chain Management rotation he landed in Rockville as Director of Operations and Hardware Design at IS&GS, about halfway through the hardware deployment of ERAM (Air Traffic Management).  In 2013, Don supplemented his ample LM Leadership training and engagement in over 100 continuous improvement events, with the PMP Certification. He has since applied those learnings as Director of Manufacturing and Supply Chain at Digital Signal Corporation, and currently at Closet America. In addition to driving performance excellence, Don has focused on team health and employee growth, in particular growing leaders . . . looking to turn difficult challenges into growth opportunities.
