Influencing Outcomes: Project Negotiations

Project Managers negotiate all through the project: deadlines, resources, scope, budgets, and much more.
This session will cover the many aspects where project negotiation is crucial, and ways to help you get the best
possible decisions and outcomes. See how to use tools and techniques from the PMBOK Guide, personal influence,
and body language tricks in negotiating to help you and your project be successful.

The presentation addresses communication perspectives for the content itself (the negotiating points), delivery of the content (methods, tone), and associated body language. Voice can help to influence, and a brief participation exercise is used to show voice tone control and projection. Body language can be observed in others to help understand their perspectives or reactions, and, body language can be delivered to help portray a tone or attitude and influence the negotiation. Video clips and pictures are used interactively to see examples and observe body language, and a specific example of hand gestures with thumbs is explored to observe and display confidence.

Negotiating is conducting the negotiation session itself, applying techniques from Preparation and Presentation, plus techniques to facilitate and influence the conversation. This addresses personal dynamics, preparing and working the room and seating to influence dynamics, techniques for facilitating and controlling the meeting, and techniques to influence the negotiating.

Key Takeaways:

By the time this presentation is complete, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss how to prepare a project for negotiations, present a case, and facilitate agreement.
  2. Describe insights and body language tricks leading toward successful negotiations.
  3. Use Power Skills to impact project deadlines, resources, scope, budgets, etc.
  4. Address how body language and personal influence can impact negotiated outcomes
