Real Smart. Real Human. Real Results: A Business Development and Leadership Crash Course for STEM Professionals.

In this presentation, Dr. Douglas Brown explains the Business Practice Paramedic approach to how to help organizations that are struggling to deliver products or services effectively but resist practices that would bring about improvements. It’s a large community, and it’s not entirely their fault. The organization simply can’t yet absorb the best practices reflected in the PMBoK, in ITIL or whatever your preferred professional guidance is.

Change management classics offer a scenario that real PMs don’t often experience: aggressive executive support, priority of resources and sound decision-making practices. No wonder research suggests that over 65% of change initiatives fail! When those assets don’t materialize, what can the rest of us do?

You will learn how to replace ineffective Maturity Models with the Paramedic approach: doing what a professional can do on the spot to get things under control now, stabilizing the situation for more elaborate measures later. We’ll explore how to:

A: Clear the AIR. Define what the problem is and why it needs to be solved.

B: Stop the BLEEDING. Find the specific symptoms and processes that people need to fix (and will let you fix) right now. Fix those. The rest will follow.

C: CONTROL the Shock of Change. Use collaborative methods, not policies, to help managers solve real problems.

This isn’t a dry presentation on yet another theory. It’s a pragmatic, sometimes irreverent, look at how Dr. Brown’s system evolved through “hard knocks” proven in multiple public and private sector program recoveries. Lively attendee participation in the discussion will convince you that you’re not alone in your struggle to get practice accepted is the rule, and will provide you with concrete ideas as to how you too can cause other managers to start demanding that you implement the very practices they had earlier resisted!
